Bunion Orthotics: Cost and What to Expect

Tired of walking around with painful lumps every day? If so, you may have thought of investing in bunion orthotics. They give feet a padded and cushioned surface to step on, along with additional comfort and arch support, making them a great way to relieve some of the pain associated with bunions. What does a doctor who deals with bunions all day think? Here are the costs, differences and what you can expect from orthotics.

How Much Do They Cost?

Off-The-Shelf Bunion Orthotics

Need a quick fix? You can grab a pair of orthotics straight off of the shelf at your nearest drug store or pharmacy, as well as the health section of most stores or online. With average costs ranging anywhere from 10 to 70 dollars. The quality can vary depending on the brand, but for the most part, these can get the job done for temporary pain relief.

Custom Bunion Orthotics

With custom orthotics, they will fit your feet much better than off-the-shelf options, albeit at a higher price. Custom options will run you anywhere from a crisp green Ben Franklin up to 1000.00 dollars . But how does it work? You use the do-it-yourself style orthotic by creating a mold of the shape of your foot, which will allow it to fit perfectly. The arch, length, and abnormalities–like bunion bumps–will all be addressed. Again, for temporary pain relief, this could be an option.

Will They Cure Your Bunions?

Long story short, no. When it comes down to it, bunion orthotics are only designed to provide structural support and comfort for your feet to help make life a little easier. They may help reduce pain temporarily from friction or pressure in certain types of footwear, but they are not a long term solution. That being said, there is only one way to permanently remove your bunions for good, and that is through surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery can be a great option for those who want to get rid of bunions and want to get back to their daily lives as fast as possible. With traditional surgery, you will spend time off your feet, in a cast or boot. With minimally invasive surgery, you can drive home after surgery and resume walking immediately. You’ll only need a post-operative shoe for a few weeks.
