Bunions

Do Bunion Corrector Sandals Work?

Bunions occur naturally as a result of your foot shape, the shoes you wear, and more. Although they are a common issue that can be treated relatively easily, bunions are extremely painful and can hinder you from things like doing your favorite activities or wearing your favorite shoes. If you find yourself suffering from bunions, it can be tempting to invest in an at home fix such as bunion corrector sandals, to get relief as fast as possible. While there is no shortage of bunion correcting home remedies and tools on the market, you might be wondering if they really work.

Do Bunion Corrector Sandals Work?

The short answer is no.

Bunion corrector sandals might work to provide short term relief for the pain that is associated with bunions, but they do not address the root cause of the problem – the fact that ligaments, tendons, and muscles inside your foot have lost their delicate balance.  While external treatments like bunion corrector sandals just bend your toe back into place, the only way to truly re-establish the balance is by re-positioning those ligaments, tendons, and muscles, then re-aligning the big toe joint. This means that, despite the companies who make and sell at home bunion correctors might claim, they are not an effective long term treatment and will only temporarily treat pain while putting you at risk for further issues in the future.

What’s The Best Way to Treat Bunions?

The only permanent way to treat bunions and ease pain is by undergoing surgery. There are two types of bunion surgery: conventional and minimally invasive.

Conventional bunion surgery is described by many physicians and patients alike as one of the most painful surgeries one can undergo. In addition to being painful this procedure also requires a postoperative recovery time of 6-8 weeks, in which patients are limited in the type of physical activity (such as walking, driving, etc.) they can do. Patients are typically required to wear a cast or boot for a few weeks, as well as care for stitches that are unable to get wet.

Minimally invasive surgery is a major development in the medical field that has made treating bunions easier than ever, allowing patients to feel relief from pain while returning to their normal lives in no time. Using local anesthesia, this surgery is performed quickly and requires no cast, boot, screws, or other tools that slow down the recovery process and limit patients’ daily activities.
